#11. Oregon & Washington

To celebrate the end of my dietetic internship (and to see Phil!), I visited Phil’s family for a week in Portland, Oregon. He showed me some of the Portland hot spots and we also spent a day in Seattle (my first trip to Washington!). The weather was amazing and I enjoyed missing the 100+ degree weather at home.

My first full day, we visited Multnomah Falls. Breathtaking. The mile hike uphil to the top is totally worth it.

We also spent some time exploring the International Rose Test Garden and taking in the view from the Pittock Mansion. When the skies are clear you can definitely see for miles. Loved the view of “real” mountains.

We also spent some time at the Saturday Market and made a stop at Voodoo Doughnuts. Phil took me to explore different areas of Portland as well and we had lots of yummy food along the way. I also experienced the people of Portland – definitely a lot of free spirits and people singing on the streets. Not something you see in Missouri (or even Pennsylvania).

The Seattle trip started off a little cloudy and hazy, but it turned out to be a perfect day. After taking the bus the wrong way and spending 30 minutes waiting for the next one, we finally made it to Pike Place Market where we were just in time to see them throw the fish. We explored the area, sampled some free food and contributed to the Gum Wall.

Our last stop in Seattle was The Space Needle. Thankfully the line wasn’t super long so we were able to make it to the top for some great views in no time at all. What a cool place!

We celebrated the 4th of July with Phil’s friends and family and enjoyed great fireworks from every direction. Great way to end a great vacation that included lots of sight-seeing, Chinese cooking, learning to use chopsticks and spending time with one amazing guy. Looking forward to my next trip out West!
